everything happens for a reason, who knows if theres a better house for cheaper or a better area...seriously don't loose faith!!! that happened to my mom and dad 5 times...someome put an offer, we made one, they made one, we made one...and we finally got the house :)
We offered on three houses. The first foreclosed after we offered but before they gave an answer, and our offer got lost in the transfer. Our second was a short sale and we were the second offer. They never responded to us. The house is still for sale (6 months now). We considered a few others and made a third offer, which they accepted. During the appraisal process, they found that some renovation was done without permits, lowering the appraised value of the house. We re-offered at the now reduced rate ($20k less) and they accepted. We are picking up our keys today.
Don't get discouraged and don't give up. Each house we offered on was better for our needs and we ended up saving 25% on what we were originally budgeting.

Bummer! FYI - house hunting is the most exciting/depressing thing. :D Good luck!
